Snow moving in for the afternoon and evening drive

Snow will be increasing across central Iowa this afternoon, leading to a slick and snowy drive home this evening. Snow totals will be highest in a narrow band stretching from northwest Iowa, through the metro, into southeastern Iowa. Expect snow to increase throughout the afternoon across most of central Iowa, with lighter snow in northern and southern parts of the state. In the metro, amounts could range from 3-4 inches around Ankeny and Altoona, to around an inch for areas around Adel and Indianola. If the system shifts any farther south, those amounts could increase by an inch or two.The snow will come to an end by early evening and we will set up for a chilly Friday. Similar to today, wind chills will stay in the teens through the day. Wind chills will dip subzero Friday night into Saturday when our next round of snow moves in. The snow will start earlier in the morning and wrap up before we end the day. This will be a light and fluffy snow with cold temperatures in place, but we could see another round of light accumulations on the order of 1 to 3 inches across a swath of central and southwest Iowa.After the snow, then the cold moves in. Subzero air temperatures will settle over Iowa Sunday morning with low temperatures between -5 and -10 degrees for much of the area. Wind chills will be around and even colder than -15° at times. The afternoon will be mostly sunny as highs slowly climb back to around 10 degrees. We will then warm back up into the 30s for Monday and even a chance for 40s deeper into next week.
