Steven R. Sykes, aged 76, of Troy, OH, passed away unexpectedly on December 17, 2025. Born on July 29, 1949, in Piqua, OH, he was the son of the late Raymond and Virginia (Hogston) Sykes.
Survived By
Steven is survived by his loving wife, Margaret D. “Maggie” (Dumper) Sykes, along with his children: Christopher and Stacy Sykes of Greenville; his daughters Megan Myers and Beth Anne Myers from Troy; and his grandchildren: Alexia Sykes, Brandon Sykes, and Asia Sykes, along with his great-granddaughter Adah Jean Frech. He is also remembered by his brother, Kerry Sykes of Urbana. Steven was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Lea (Houchen) Sykes, and his sister, Tammarra Kuntzman.
Education and Career
Steven was a proud 1967 graduate of Piqua Central High School. He earned an Associate of Science Degree from Edison State Community College and continued his education at Bluffton University, where he attained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration. Steven served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and continued his service in the National Guard.
Throughout his life, Steven was deeply committed to his community and faith. He was a faithful member of SonRise Church, serving as a Pastor at the Troy and Piqua Freewill Baptist Churches and the Troy Gospel Tabernacle for a total of 23 years. Professionally, he worked for many years as a Plant Manager with French Oil. After retiring in 2000, he transitioned to education as a Professor of Manufacturing/Industrial Management at Edison State Community College.
Personal Interests
An avid golfer and Harley rider, Steven shared his passion by instructing motorcycle riding for the State of Ohio and Harley Davidson. He also cherished moments spent camping with family. A highlight of his life was taking the Honor Flight to Washington, DC, alongside fellow veterans, an experience that was close to his heart.
Services
A memorial service in honor of Steven R. Sykes will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, December 22, 2025, at the First United Methodist Church in Troy. Interment will take place at Miami Memorial Park in Covington, OH. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Baird Funeral Home in Troy.
