Emma Willis has officially weighed in on one of Hollywood’s most enduring debates: whether “Die Hard” deserves its place among beloved Christmas films. Since the movie exploded onto screens in 1988, fans have argued over its status as a holiday classic.

The action thriller follows New York cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he attempts to save his estranged wife, Holly Gennaro McClane (Bonnie Bedelia), and others taken hostage during a Christmas Eve party.

For Emma, 47, the film remains an essential part of the Willis family festivities. She told People, “I think it’s important to put ‘Die Hard’ on because it’s a Christmas movie.”
Her stance contrasts with Bruce’s famously blunt take. During the “Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis” in 2018, the star insisted, “Die Hard is not a Christmas movie. It’s a goddamn Bruce Willis movie!”

Bruce retired from acting in 2022 following his diagnosis of aphasia, a condition affecting speech and comprehension. In 2023, his family revealed that his symptoms had progressed to frontotemporal dementia (FTD), a disorder that impacts language, behavior, and personality.
Despite these challenges, Emma says the Willis family continues to find meaning and joy during the holidays. The mother of two, who shares daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Bruce, told the outlet, “There is still joy. It just looks different.”

She acknowledged the emotional difficulty many families face when caring for loved ones with dementia, adding, “You have to learn and adapt and make new memories, bring in the same traditions that you had before.
“Life goes on. It just goes on. Dementia is hard, but there is still joy in it,” she said. “I think it’s important that we don’t paint such a negative picture around dementia.”

Emma recently opened up about the overwhelming lack of support the family received when Bruce was first diagnosed. She told Yahoo! “The day we received the diagnosis, we walked out of that appointment with nothing — no hope, no direction, no support.”
The early years, she noted, were especially difficult, “With FTD, those early years are so hard because you’re trying to figure it all out in real time It’s a progressive disease.” As Bruce’s needs changed, she added, “You have to rev up the support.”
